By “perfect gift ideas”, I mean thoughtful, inexpensive, modest gifts that are delightful and light-hearted. You don’t want to seem like you’re trying to hard to please your boyfriend’s parents – but you don’t want to look like you don’t care. It’s a fine balance, which is what these gifts offer.
As you scroll through these gift ideas for your boyfriend’s parents, think about their hobbies, lifestyle and interests. Are they:
- Dog or cat lovers?
- Active and adventurous, or homebodies?
- Technology oriented?
- Involved in their children and grandchildren’s lives?
- Interested in travel and culture?
- Retired or still working?
- Dealing with health issues?
- Living in a big city or small town?
Finding the perfect gift for your boyfriend’s parents involves a bit of thought – so I hope you haven’t left your shopping to the last minute! 🙂 Give yourself time to think about his mom and dad’s habits, lifestyle, and activities when you’re choosing the right gift for the holidays.
20 Gifts, Tips, and Ideas for Your Boyfriend’s Mom and Dad
If you don’t know his parents well – or if you’ve only met them a couple of times – you may have no idea what to give them. Worse, you may feel anxious or even scared to give them the “wrong” gift. This is normal, especially in new relationships – but don’t let anxiety or fear overwhelm and paralyze you.
Give a gift from your heart, and you will show your boyfriend’s parents that you sincerely care about their son. That’s the most important thing you could ever give his mom and dad. They’ll never be offended by a gift given from your heart.
Handmade Personalized Cutting Board
The Personalized Dandelion Cutting Board is a popular gift for both parents – even if your boyfriend’s mom and dad aren’t master chefs. Cutting boards are a necessary tool in every kitchen, and a personalized one will inspired warm thoughts about you every time they’re in the kitchen.
You can choose what’s engraved on the board – it can say “Happy Birthday, Mom” or even a short phrase such as “I couldn’t have asked for a better mother.” This gift for your boyfriend’s parents is fully functional, and can be used for cutting, chopping, and slicing all sorts of food.
Digital Photo Frame That You Can Load From a Distance
The Nixplay Original 15 inch WiFi Cloud Digital Photo Frame is a thoughtful gift because it allows his parents to stay close to their son – even if you yourself aren’t super close to your boyfriend’s mom and dad. And that’s the best gift in the world for any parent: a closer connection to their son.
This digital photo frame is awesome because you can send pictures direct to the frame from your iPhone or Android phone, which means you can share what you and your boyfriend are doing, quickly and easily. The frame receives photos directly from email, iPhones, Android and phones. It can also access photos from Facebook, Instagram, Dropbox, and Picasa. This is a perfect gift idea for your boyfriend’s parents especially if they aren’t on Facebook or other social media sites. My husband’s parents don’t even check email regularly, which would make this an interesting gift for them.
A Flowering Teapot Gift for Your Boyfriend’s Mom
The Juliet Glass Teapot Set by Tea Beyond is a lovely gift for your boyfriend’s mom and dad – it’s actually one of my favorite gifts for all occasions: birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, special occasions.
This gift is creative and pretty, and it’ll delight his mother in particular. It’s also practical and useful. This flowering tea set is really unique; the tea leaves open up and blossom into flowers when hot water is poured in the teapot. This is one of those perfect gift ideas that even non-tea drinkers will enjoy playing with.
It’s an especially lovely gift if your boyfriend’s mom and dad are older, and you’re searching for gifts for elderly parents who have everything. Unless, of course, you know they don’t drink tea. That’s why you need to know a little bit about your boyfriend’s parents before you can find them the perfect gift…
Flowering Tea Nests
The Teabloom Heart Shaped Flowering Tea – 12 Assorted Blooming Tea Flowers Gift Set is the perfect accompaniment to the flowering teapot.
Your boyfriend’s mom will love the choice of a dozen flavors; each canister contains a tasty selection of fruit flowering teas: Apple Cinnamon, Tangerine Spice, Pomegranate, Strawberry, Acai Berry, Pineapple, Orange, Mango, Vanilla, Melon, Litchi and Peach.
The flowering tea balls are hand sewn by artisans, making them each a one-of-a-kind gourmet work of art. Fresh green tea leaves and edible flowers such as marigold, jasmine and globe amaranth blossoms are sewn together. This offers a mix of subtle and bold fruit flavors in every sip – which is why this really should be the first gift on my list of ideas for your boyfriend’s parents!
Creative Photo Picture Frame
The Klikel Family Tree Picture Frame With 10 Hanging Picture Frames is perfect for parents who aren’t keen on digital photo frames. If your boyfriend’s parents don’t use digital things in their home, don’t give them a gift that revolves around technology! Instead, meet them where they’re at.
The Family Tree picture frame allows his mom and dad to creatively move the branches to fit the space. And, of course the photos can be inserted into the frame before you give his parents the gift! You may need to ask your boyfriend or his family for help choosing the best photos for the frame. Or, if it’s difficult or impossible to get the pictures before you give your boyfriend’s parent this gift, you could be creative and insert a little message or word of encouragement in each frame.
Personalized Calendar With Pictures of Your Boyfriend
Related to picture frame gift ideas, a Personalized Photo Calendar Kit could be a lovely gift for parents – if you have the time to create it for them. Don’t give them stuff to do, unless you know they’d enjoy creating their own family calendars. Last Christmas I used VistaPrint to create calendars for my Little Sister, husband, his parents, and my mom. It was a beautiful gift that outlasts the calendar year.
Hot Chocolate on a Stick – a Gourmet Gift for Parents Who Host Dinners
The Hot Chocolate on a Stick – 6 Pack Variety Gift Box is a fun, light-hearted practical gift if your boyfriend’s parents enjoy gourmet chocolate. And who doesn’t?
The Premium & All Natural Hot Chocolate on a Stick is a 6 Pack Variety Gift Box contains 2 Dark, 2 Milk, and 2 Vanilla White Hot Chocolate Sticks. It’s easy to make: simply fill up a cup of hot milk, place the hot chocolate stick in the cup, and stir for 1-2 minutes until the chocolate dissolves completely.
Each Hot Chocolate Stick comes individually wrapped in a clear bag with instructions. The gift box contains a brown satin bow, and it’s shelf stable (which means it doesn’t need to be refrigerated).
Entertaining and Wine-Related Gift Ideas
The Vacu Vin Vacuum Wine Saver is a bestselling wine product – and it’s not just for wine connoisseurs. It’s actually for regular people who can’t drink a whole bottle of wine in one sitting, and who want to save the rest for later.
Get my free weekly "Blossom Tips" email - it's short and sweet. You'll love it!
This wine gift seals up an open bottle of wine and keeps it fresh for next time. It’s a great gift if your boyfriend’s parents like to serve wine when they entertain, or if they enjoy hosting birthday parties and holiday dinners. This is one of my favorite gift ideas – and we gave to my husband’s parents a few years ago.
A related wine gift and idea are the Wine Glass Writer Metallic Pens. They’re not just for wine glasses – you can write your name or a message on highball glasses, beer steins, or even coffee mugs.
If you have no idea what to give your boyfriend’s mom for her birthday, remember that his siblings or dad might be a good source of gift tips. Ask them about the specific gift you’re thinking of giving his mom. For instance, are wine-related gifts good for your boyfriend’s parents or are they recovering alcoholics? Asking for feedback on specific gift ideas will make it easier to find the perfect way to celebrate your boyfriend’s mom’s birthday.
Dinner for Your Boyfriend’s Parents
An Olive Garden Gift Card – or a gift card to a restaurant near their home – is a good gift for his mom and dad to enjoy together. Who doesn’t like to be taken out for dinner? There are dozens of gift certificates for popular restaurants, such as Applebee’s, Chili’s, Cheesecake Factory, PF Chang’s, Red Robin, etc.
I like the idea of giving your boyfriend’s parents a restaurant gift card – and to encourage them to have a meal with their son. Parents never feel like they spend enough time with their kids (generally speaking!). If you create bridges so your boyfriend sees his mom and dad more often, they’ll love you. That’s a beautiful gift to give his parents – and him, as well. Give them space to connect and love each other.
A Yoga, Painting, or Other Class With You
I don’t spend enough time with my mother-in-law, even though she is an awesome woman. And, I am so grateful to both her and my father-in-law for raising my husband to be the man he is! Giving a gift of gratitude, such as a gift certificate for a painting or yoga class together, would be an awesome idea for my in-laws.
If you’re close to your boyfriend’s parents, you might consider giving his mom an experience you can do together. Your boyfriend’s dad probably doesn’t care too much what gift you give them, but your boyfriend’s mom will. A gift idea that offers you the opportunity to spend time together would probably be appreciated very much.
If you know your boyfriend’s parents well, it may be easier to find the perfect gift idea because you have an idea of their likes and dislikes. If you don’t know your boyfriend’s mom and dad, then you need to find gift ideas that aren’t too personal. Such as…
A Fruit and Nut Gift Tray for Your Boyfriend’s Busy Parents
The Hula Delights Deluxe Roasted Gift Basket is a safe and perfect gift for parents you don’t know well, especially if they’re hosting a holiday party or dinner.
I spend every holiday with my in-laws, and both my husband’s parents love getting gift baskets! We sort through the assorted offerings – in this case it’s gourmet seasoned almonds, assorted cheeses, sausage, and olive and pimento cheese dip, mint chocolate wafer cookies, and other gourmet snacks.
This a practical gift for your boyfriend’s parents because they can share it with family and friends. I love when my in-laws’ get gift baskets and party trays, because I get to enjoy the delicious snacks 🙂
Gourmet Coffee Gift Set
The Bean Box World Coffee Tour Gourmet Sampler includes coffees from around the world. This is one of my favorite gift ideas for parents and in-laws because most of them entertain family and friends. Coffee is what they do, and they’ll enjoy sampling these different roasts and types of beans.
The Bean Box Gourmet Coffee Sampler includes beans from Ethiopia, Kenya, Indonesia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Colombia, Panama, Brazil, and Kona. Your boyfriend’s mom and dad will enjoy experiencing the gift of chocolaty Latin American coffees, fruit-forward African roasts, earthy Sumatran blends, and everything in between.
Kicking Horse Dark Whole Bean Coffee is a solid, delicious cup of java. If your boyfriend’s parents are coffee drinkers, they’ll love it. You might also consider a Starbucks coffee gift basket, but Kicking Horse tastes better to me. It’s fair trade, shade grown, and organic – and everyone needs good coffee at home. This is a good gift for your boyfriend’s parents even if they aren’t coffee drinkers. Why? Because they serve coffee to guests and family members. And, if you’re a coffee drinker this gift allows you to enjoy a delicious cup of java when you’re visiting them 🙂
Hawaiian Coffee and Tea – a Practical Gift Idea for a Boyfriend’s Parents
The Coffee and Tea Gift of Kona Hawaiian Coffee and Tropical Tea is a beautifully wrapped and presented coffee and tea gift. His parents will recognize the “Ernest Hemingway” name on the tropical tea, and will also recognize the Hawaiian theme.
Coffees and teas are my favorite gifts to receive at any time of the year, because I can share them with people who come to my place to visit. I especially love sampler bags of tea, so my guests can pick what they want to drink.

A Beautiful Vase and Fresh Flowers
The Handcrafted Blown Glass Flower Vase is gorgeous – even though normally I don’t encourage people to buy gifts that sit on shelves (unless, of course, your boyfriend’s mom and dad collect flowers and vases!).
This flower vase is one-of-a-kind. It’s sophisticated and sculptural vase is uniquely handmade by skilled glassblowers, featuring subtle, curved contours and an organic, delicate pattern filled with colors and white gold accents. It’s a work of art will be a true focal point wherever it’s displayed – and it serves a practical purpose!
Add a Flowering Fields Bouquet, and your gift is complete. If you add a bouquet of flowers, make sure it doesn’t come with a vase.
Art isn’t usually a good gift to give people because it’s so taste-dependent. That is, what you think is art may be very different from what your boyfriend’s parents think is art! But a hand-blown vase is different because it can be put away. 🙂 If your boyfriend’s parents hate this gift, they can just store it in a cupboard.
Are you still struggling to find the right gift idea? Think back to the last three or four gifts you gave your own parents. Maybe you can give them something you gave your own parents in the past, and see if your boyfriend’s mom and dad like the gift as much as your parents did.
The All-New Fire HD 10 Tablet is an especially perfect gift for his mom if she’s seen and asked about your own digital devices. Even if your boyfriend’s parents already have a Kobo or iPad, they will appreciate getting a newer, updated version. If his mom and dad like to read books or ask Google a quick question – such as what gift ideas are good for their son’s girlfriend 🙂 – they can easily and quickly turn their Kindle on.
This is a much more expensive gift idea for your boyfriend’s parents than, say, coffee or a vase…but it might be more thoughtful. It’s light, contains thousands of books, movies, tv shows, games, and magazines, and comes with free Kindle Unlimited.
His ‘n Hers Slippers
Sorel Men’s and Women’s Slippers should be at the top of this list of gift ideas for your boyfriend’s parents! Slippers are good because most people wear them around home, and if not appreciated at least they’re not big, bulky, and in the way. They can be shared with guests – in fact, I have a basket of slippers that my guests wear when it’s cold or rainy outside.
By the way, slippers are also an awesome gift idea for boyfriends, especially those who are the “slipper type.” My husband has worn his slippers thin, and is always happy to get a new pair.
The last gifts I gave my in-laws included an automatic card shuffler, a gift certificate to the Keg, and a calendar with me and Bruce plastered over every month. The more personal the gift, the more parents like it.
